Concrete vs Asphalt

Both asphalt and concrete are made with stone and sand. The difference involves their adhesive materials. Asphalt is petroleum based while concrete is made of cement.

When you’re building a new home, having a proper driveway is very important. The cost of an asphalt driveway is cheaper than concrete. You should understand the maintenance and repairs involved in it.

Characteristics of the asphalt:
  • Asphalt is a softer material. It deteriorates faster and easier compared to concreter material.
  • With good maintenance, expensive repair can be avoided.
  • Creative design is not necessary compared with concrete repairs.
  • Asphalt requires more maintenance but it is easier than concrete.
  • Asphalt is not affected by the cold. It absorbs more heat from the sun causing snow and ice to melt quicker.
  • Asphalt material is environmentally friendly. It is defined as green technology because it can be recycled. When asphalt is recycled, the old asphalt is ground up and reused.

Characteristics of concrete material:
  • Concrete is more durable than asphalt
  • Concrete can lasts for more than 50 years.
  • A concrete driveway offers more creative appearances. It can be tinted to different colors, or engraved with designs.
  • It is an investment upfront and can withstand a long life.
  • Concrete reduces future inconveniences.
  • They are ideal for new roads, and expansion in urban areas.
  • Concrete is 100 percent recyclable. It is good for underground utility repair such as areas exposed to natural elements.
  • The paving cost for concrete is smaller than asphalt.
  • Concrete roads do not develop potholes easily.

When performing repairs, it is hard to choose concrete or asphalt materials. Neither material is ideal than the other. When choosing between asphalt vs. concrete roads or parking lots, consider several pros and cons. Sometimes, the right material can be a bargain.

The qualities of each material depends most to your decision. Plan ahead and select the best material to your project.
