Concrete and Cement

Cement is a fine powder that binds concrete together. It is composed of crushed materials such as limestone and clay that serve as binder. Cement is made from various materials. In making cement, the first step is to extract limestone and several materials from quarry by blasting.  The materials are reduced in size, and for plant processing. Materials such as clay, iron ore, gypsum, and minerals are ground with the limestone in producing raw meal which has uniformed size and chemistry.

The raw meal is processed in a kiln which is 2, 642 degrees Fahrenheit or 1, 450 degrees Celsius.  A rotary cement kiln is a long tube of 12 feet in diameter and upwards of 300 feet long which is based on the capacity of the plant’s production. Concrete is the final product from mixing cement, aggregates, involving sand, water, and admixtures. It is made of four ingredients that are mixed in particular ratio based on the application.

There are various types of concrete such as self consolidating concrete which is flowable, and can spread in a place without separating. Polymer concrete is another example that has catalyst to bind aggregates together.
Ready mixed concrete is produced in a batch plant and transported to the project site.

Different admixtures are used to have optimal results in several weather conditions. It is important to understand the function of concrete on sustainable and green revolution systems. Concrete stand for thousands of years, and gain strength throughout a long period of time.

Old buildings and demolished bridges from concrete can be crushed, reduced, incorporated into new batches as the aggregate component. Concrete is an absolute energy efficient building material because of its inherent thermal and capacity to absorb heat.

Recycled materials such as post consumer glass and slag cement are incorporated for masonry units that promote green and sustainable design.
